How can a “pirate” be a “customer” ? Do you mean pirates are “Users”. I’m interested in how decreasing the number of pirating Users dooms Microsoft ? Do you mean it will force a move to using other Operating Systems such as Ubuntu, rather than forcing them into paying for MS products ?

I’m interested in all this; specfically the percentage of pirated copies being used vs. legitimate, and how those numbers compare to “everything else”. Links would be appreciated for more in-depth reading.

Also, I’m doing research on SLIC 1.2 and how it relates to Windows 7 activation and cracking. I’ve yet to find a basic explanation for the entire concept/process for an interested non-professional. Wikipedia does not seem to have an article describing what it is, how it works and what may be coming in the future.

Officially Microsoft wants to protect its IP thus the draconian security, but also because it wants to spread awareness to enterprise level admins that Microsoft is tight on security. Whether that works out or not one thing is certain, the billion dollar giant didn’t make billions off the consumer market regardless what its zealot competitors argue.

Unofficially Microsoft knows majority of its customers are pirates, killing the piracy would speak unspeakable doom for the Redmond giant. On top of that they want to unofficially challenge its competitors, 20% maybe 25% of Microsoft sales are based off Beta and RTM that’s what drives their market value *piracy*. The more the interest the higher the expectations at release, its a good strategy since Microsoft is a software only company they have nothing to loose even from piracy thus leaving in a breakable license system.

I wonder what the pundits are thinking?!

M$ can’t disable OEM SLIC activation without causing problems so that method will still work.

They were unable to disable the OEM activation with Vista because no way to tell OEM from Pirate OEM

@Bob Smithe: I don’t see anything compelling forcing me to stay on Windows. Most of the computers I manage for my parents and siblings don’t need Windows either but I’ve left it on there because it is tolerable. If I have to jump through too many hurdles then I’m more than happy to move servers and desktops over to Linux and Apple.

@Alfredo: I agree a new key will be out and offline activation will work until Microsoft blacklists the key in updated installation media such as ISO images and DVDs.

You must not realize that the blacklisted key is a master OEM key. Capable of activating Windows 7 on SLIC 2.1 enabled PCs (with the corresponding OEM certificate) “offline”! Even if it does get blacklisted, it will still activate RTM offline! So worst case scenario, you cant run Windows Update until you get a new key. And a new key will appear very soon

I disagree. There will be a problem because Microsoft will release a WGA update that will put your Windows 7 installation into a limited mode with nag screens everywhere. You have very limited choices if you continue to go forward with a blacklisted key because you’ll have to forego automatic Windows Updates and make sure Microsoft doesn’t sneak in WGA through another innocuous update. This headache alone makes purchasing Windows 7 for would-be pirates a better option.

Yep, they will blacklist the key but since I will use the activator, there won’t be any problems

Don’t get your hopes up. Microsoft’s Genuine Windows Blog has stated that they’ll be blacklisting the leaked key.

Very good post. Congratulations!

I was willing to buy the Home Premium Upgrade for $50.00 but I missed the presale

Now, my only choice (as I DONT’ HAVE the 120 dollars to spend on it) is to use a “loader” and download one of the DVD ISO Windows 7 images that are available now.

If Microsoft decides to lower it’s prices again, then I will be more than happy to buy it.
