iPod Rant & More

This iPod craze makes me laugh. There are so many people out there today carrying around their piddly music collections on an ipod which the fashionably wear on the outside of their clothing or at least try to show off those shiny white ear buds. It’s actually sickening. I mean, when I wear my next Dolce & Gabbana suit, I’ll make sure to leave the tags on or better yet, I’ll have a HUGE D&G logo across the front and back of the jacket. Oh and my Salvatore Ferragamo loafers, we’ll just leave the tags on those too. The Clive Christian No. 1 Pure Parfum (probably the world’s most expensive fragrance), well, I’ll duct tape the bottle to my D&G suit so you can both see it and smell it. Anything left? Ya sure, eyeglasses, watches, cuff links, neckwear, long coats and the list goes on. Since when is an iPod a necessary accessory that must be displayed to the world?

Why am I so bitter? I suppose part of the reason is that Apple rips off its customers with its huge margins but I guess if you are the type that is vain enough to wear your iPod where everyone can see it, then you deserve to have a little less money in your wallet. When Apple was falling off the face of the planet the only place these people with their iPods today could ever remember an Apple product was playing Oregon Trail in elementary school. I have to admit that Steve Jobs has done an unbelieveable job turning the company around. The release of Mac OS X is also something that us hardcore computer users praise. Although OS X looks pretty, underneath it all is UNIX which gives these Apple machines an unbelieveable breadth of applications to accomplish tasks. However, most Apple computer users never even see what’s under the hood. I suppose that if Apple needs these iPod-fanatics to support their other business ventures, then I guess I’ll have to just accept the show-off-your-iPod fad. Sometimes, the means justify the ends.

Just a note: I don’t own an iPod and probably never will. For my mobile MP3 listening I have my trusty Nokia 6620 Symbian PDA/Phone with a 1 gigabyte MMC card for storage. I can browse the internet with Opera browser and check email over an EDGE internet connection from anywhere in the world that has cellular phone access. No iPod can do that.

Now that I got that off my chest, I can post what I was going to earlier…

Some guy made a product which allows you to recharge your iPod shuffle with a handcrank. Somehow I don’t see too many iPod users jumping on board. Link is here. If you end up building one, let me know how it works for you. I also wonder if users of bigger iPods might be able to make it work for that application.

And as alawys, I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t put in some good ‘ole toilet humor. Supposedly this $5000 toilet can do it all. The article was pretty fun to read. Link is here.

Last thing I guess. Adidas is coming out with a new shoe with a microprocessor in it which will adjust the shoe’s cushioning based on the conditions it detects. However, it will cost $250 when it’s released. Sounds cool, maybe I’ll wear these once I buy that iPod. Link is here.
